Kine A week told you “The latest sturdy ‘crooks fall out’ try peopled having a colorful variety of vital and arresting emails, and they, skilfully manipulated by blogger and director, allow the motion picture to tread h2o efficiently. It is only for the end so it actually starts to break apart, although slap-upwards finale rescues it throughout the ‘red’. Ingeniously staged and you can intelligently dialogued, it will have no great issue when you look at the way of life down their extremely ugly term.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Flick Bulletin told you “The film movements within an easy pace, the latest dialogue are smooth and you will characterisations fundamentally effective. Dick Powell and you may Evelyn Keyes head the fresh new cast expertly, due to the fact detective are played with considerable aplomb from the that individual character, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]
Richard Brody throughout the The fresh Yorker listed “It terse and you can taut flick noir are based on the latest romantic and you may top-notch disputes of the label character, the violent genius (played by the Dick Powell) at the rear of a sophisticated illegal gambling enterprise. The fresh film’s journalist and manager, Robert Rossen, sets up an excellent multidimensional chess game, getting mortal bet, anywhere between Johnny, his boss (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s wife (Ellen Received), an excellent cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can good scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sis (Nina Foch) did at the gambling enterprise and you will old an excellent corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The caustically epigrammatic program, the newest cast’s suavely regulated gestures off love and you can menace, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you may fashionably cocky pictures (along with their political conscience) make this pugnacious but really intricate spectacle a hidden classic of one’s genre.” [ ten ]

Photo possess action and anticipation, and you will particular small matches from laughs to provide preferences. Ace performances by the Dick Powell, because a playing domestic overseer, and Lee J. Cobb, since an authorities inspector, in addition to in the rating . Although the area comes after a common development, the fresh new characterizations try new and the shows adequate in order to overbalance. Dialogue was terse and you may topical, steering clear of the sentimental, phoney reach. Uncommon camera basics arrive once in a while so you can intensify attract and you can temporarily stop the interest. Strong teamplay because of the Robert Rossen, doubling since movie director-scripter, and you will Milton Holmes, brand spanking new creator and you will representative producer, plus helps with making this a flaccid development.” [ eleven ]

Its generally a question of viewing Mr. Powell read their paces fashionably when you are a giant cast of actors and actresses offer him classic help. Evelyn Keyes takes on the great absolutely nothing woman who brings about the new best in your and you can Ellen Received is the easy and you may slinky vixen just who gets him into the jams. Thomas Gomez was greasy since villain and you can Lee J. Cobb does a different sort of in a position tour since the an exhausted cops inspector who ultimately closes the situation. Many consuming and you may smoking is done of the all the concerned.” [ a dozen ]
